BEND FIRE DEPARTMENT
MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF
On December 16, 2009 we delivered the 2009 Deployment Plan for the City of Bend Fire Department to the Bend City Council. The plan provides an overview of the department and the services that we deliver to the community.
The Deployment Plan is based on a template developed by the Oregon Fire Chief's Association and is intended to provide the community with an objective look at the Fire Department services and performance.
I believe that our plan speaks to a department that is extremely lean and efficient. It shows that our personnel work hard to provide high quality and effective emergency services to the City of Bend and Deschutes County Rural Fire Protection District #2. The plan also points out weaknesses in our ability to provide effective and timely emergency services during periods of high activity due to lack of personnel.
As a result of the deployment plan presentation, the Bend City Council directed the city Manager and the Fire Chief to pursue the possibility of the Deschutes County Rural Fire Protection District #2 annexing the City of Bend in order to provide additional funding for fire protection.
We understand that this is a difficult time to request additional funding but it is incumbent on the Fire Chief to be open and honest about the level of service the department is providing, and to be clear and forthright on recommendations to correct inadequacies.
We want to assure the citizens of Bend and the Dechutes County Rural Fire Protection District #2 that we will continue to provide the best service possible given the resources at our disposal.
